Why sleep matters so much in the growing years

Growing bodies do a lot of work at night. Here is how much sleep kids need and how to protect it.

Sleep is when the body rests, recovers and does much of its growing-up work. Kids who sleep well also tend to eat, learn and play better.

How much is enough?

  • Ages 3–5: 10 to 13 hours (including naps)
  • Ages 6–12: 9 to 12 hours
  • Ages 13–18: 8 to 10 hours

Small changes that help

  • Same bedtime and wake time, even on weekends
  • No screens in the last hour before bed
  • A cool, dark, quiet bedroom
  • Caffeine-free afternoons — watch sodas and energy drinks
