Fueling active teens: food first, then fill the gaps

Practice, games, school and growth spurts — teen athletes need more than most. A simple game plan.

Active teens burn a lot of energy, and the teen years are when the body builds most of its bone. That makes everyday nutrition doubly important.

The game plan

  • Three real meals and two snacks — skipping breakfast is the most common gap.
  • Calcium at most meals: milk, yogurt, cheese or fortified drinks.
  • Protein after practice: eggs, chicken, beans, Greek yogurt.
  • Water through the day, more on training days.

Rest is training too

Muscles and bones recover between sessions. Eight to ten hours of sleep is part of the plan, not a bonus.
